Chapter Ten
âBekka and I wonât be here for Thanksgiving.â Stephen set his cello onto its stand and stood, stretching the kinks from his back.
Ethan, who was taking a moment to relax on the hard leather couch, went over his mental calendar trying to remember if heâd made any commitments for them during that time. Heâd been trying hard to say no more often. Except he had a really hard time saying no.
âWhatâs going on?â A mild headache had settled across Ethanâs forehead. He hoped that taking a short break would stop it from turning into a full-fledged migraine.
âWeâre going to Chicago to visit Beth and Ma. I know you guys always make a big deal over Christmas, plus you have the Hoopalooza and wedding going on. So I agreed to go see them now. But weâll be there at least the whole week.â Stephen flopped into the chair across from him.
âHowâs Jean doing?â Ethan asked. âHas she made any progress with Beth during their family counseling?â
âSeems to be. They want me to sit in for a couple of sessions. Thatâs why Iâm not sure how long Iâll be up there. Bekka is coming along as moral support.â He grinned. âAnd donât worry, sheâll be staying with Beth while I camp out on Maâs couch. Both have their own apartments now.â
âGood for Jean. Iâve been praying for both of them.â Matter-of-fact, heâd been doing a lot of praying lately. Praying about where to go with their businesses in the future. Praying about how to fit in a baby. Praying for understanding on why Haley was being so stubborn about everything.
Ethan leaned up on his elbow so he could see his friend better. âHey, listen. Iâve been thinking and I know youâre going to disagree with me, but I want to try again to invite Mr. Conn here. I got a call from Berry the other day. Do you know which Berry Iâm talking about?â
Stephen started to shake his head, then the memory must have come to him. He offered a slow nod. âFrom the Skybirds. Heâs one of Connâs bands. So we already invited this guy and he stood us up. I think he likes who heâs with.â
âNot anymore. They had some kind of falling out. Berry said now was the time to contact him, so Iâm writing up an email proposal right now. Onlyââ
Stephenâs head fell back against the chair. âWhat now? Weâve updated and expanded our equipment. Every time weâre almost ahead, you want to do something new.â
âSo we can compete with others out there. You should see the studio he was working with. It looked like some kind of resort. Out in the woods...â
âWeâre out in the woods.â Stephen countered. âTechnically.â
Beautiful, inspirational decor.â
âWe have...well, itâs functional. And we have room accommodations. Soon as Jeremy and I move out.â
Ethan sat up, causing his head to pound harder. Whereâd they put the aspirin, anyway? âBut they were like a resort, Stephen. They had places for them to stay. Big rooms where they could play andââ
âYou listen, E-man.
