Chapter Ten

“Bekka and I won’t be here for Thanksgiving.” Stephen set his cello onto its stand and stood, stretching the kinks from his back.

Ethan, who was taking a moment to relax on the hard leather couch, went over his mental calendar trying to remember if he’d made any commitments for them during that time. He’d been trying hard to say no more often. Except he had a really hard time saying no.

“What’s going on?” A mild headache had settled across Ethan’s forehead. He hoped that taking a short break would stop it from turning into a full-fledged migraine.

“We’re going to Chicago to visit Beth and Ma. I know you guys always make a big deal over Christmas, plus you have the Hoopalooza and wedding going on. So I agreed to go see them now. But we’ll be there at least the whole week.” Stephen flopped into the chair across from him.

“How’s Jean doing?” Ethan asked. “Has she made any progress with Beth during their family counseling?”

“Seems to be. They want me to sit in for a couple of sessions. That’s why I’m not sure how long I’ll be up there. Bekka is coming along as moral support.” He grinned. “And don’t worry, she’ll be staying with Beth while I camp out on Ma’s couch. Both have their own apartments now.”

“Good for Jean. I’ve been praying for both of them.” Matter-of-fact, he’d been doing a lot of praying lately. Praying about where to go with their businesses in the future. Praying about how to fit in a baby. Praying for understanding on why Haley was being so stubborn about everything.

Ethan leaned up on his elbow so he could see his friend better. “Hey, listen. I’ve been thinking and I know you’re going to disagree with me, but I want to try again to invite Mr. Conn here. I got a call from Berry the other day. Do you know which Berry I’m talking about?”

Stephen started to shake his head, then the memory must have come to him. He offered a slow nod. “From the Skybirds. He’s one of Conn’s bands. So we already invited this guy and he stood us up. I think he likes who he’s with.”

“Not anymore. They had some kind of falling out. Berry said now was the time to contact him, so I’m writing up an email proposal right now. Only—”

Stephen’s head fell back against the chair. “What now? We’ve updated and expanded our equipment. Every time we’re almost ahead, you want to do something new.”

“So we can compete with others out there. You should see the studio he was working with. It looked like some kind of resort. Out in the woods...”

“We’re out in the woods.” Stephen countered. “Technically.”

Beautiful, inspirational decor.”

“We have...well, it’s functional. And we have room accommodations. Soon as Jeremy and I move out.”

Ethan sat up, causing his head to pound harder. Where’d they put the aspirin, anyway? “But they were like a resort, Stephen. They had places for them to stay. Big rooms where they could play and—”

“You listen, E-man.
